The final piece, which shares the title of the book, The Treehouse, is a work of horror dealing with the inner struggles of a man and his deformed daughter whose existence is unknown to her mother after her twin died at birth. He keeps her hidden from both his wife and society in the backwoods of his house. She is his alter ego, his child, his penance.
