Book excerpt: Blackwater Hollow, a rural West Virginia town, is home to Sam Fulton and his family. When his best friend and neighbor Chloe goes missing one autumn night, the search for her leads Sam to a sinister creature out for blood inside of shallow abandoned mining shafts. Sam narrowly survives this encounter, and wakes to find his world is much different than he left it. Chloe's body has been discovered and another child is missing. With the body count rising, Sam struggles to find anyone to believe him about what he saw, even his own father and Sheriff of the small town, Gerald. The only one who does believe him is Lacy, who has pined for Sam in Chloe's shadow for the last few years. His younger brother Wyatt's abduction spurs Sam to action, and creates a climactic showdown with the beast where Sam's survival is anything but a guarantee.
