Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study is to develop useful Genetic Algorithm (GA) models to solve two telecommunication network design problems: degree-constrained minimum spanning tree (DCMST) and Steiner-tree star (STS) in digital data service (DDS). The thesis is divided into three major parts. First, a review of general network design problems is presented, followed by a review of general GA model and its current applications in the network design problem. In the second part, we propose a revised mathematical programming model of DCMST. To consider both upper and lower degree constraints for each node, a hybrid GA model was then developed to solve the problem. The mathematical formulation was enhanced to improve the fault-tolerance problem in traditional DCMST.
