Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of Intercepted Plant Pests, 1946 In some cases collections made late in the year are included in the report for the following year, since determinations cannot be obtained immediately for all of them. Occasionally determinations are delayed for longer periods. The data for this list are obtained from routine reports by personnel of this Bureau, supplemented by information supplied by State and Customs officials. The States of California and Florida maintain staffs of specialists who determine a large proportion of the material collected at their ports. Specialists of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering determine many of the difficult or unusual pathogens collected at the ports. All scientific names are reviewed by appropriate specialists in the Department to see that they conform to the international rules of nomenclature. While every reasonable effort is made to give the correct origin for all collee tions listed, the alleged origin of plant materials cannot be verified in all cases, and doubtful items are either omitted or the origin is listed as unknown. In that connection it should be pointed out that facts coming to attention since publication of the List of Intercepted Plant Pests for 1945 indicate that the citrus canker, reported from Australia, originated in some other citrus-growing region of the world. The end of hostilities in Asia and the return home of many persons in military service during the year, tended to reduce the number of interceptions in service mail and baggage.
