Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Pension Plan Terminations, 1972: Interim Report Chapters 2 through 5 of this report present the results of the Treasury survey of pension plans reported terminated during 1972. Chapter 2 and the Appendix discuss what is meant by a termination and the scope and method of the survey. 1/ Chapter 3 discusses the number of terminations and extent of benefit losses reported during 1972. About claimants in 546 plans lost bene fits out of claimants in terminated plans. Claimants losing benefits represent about eight one-hundredths of one percent of all workers covered by private pension plans. 0f the claimants with losses, about claimants were retired, eligible for retirement, or fully vested. 2/ The total present value of benefits lost by all claimants with losses was about million, or about per claimant. In other words, for all claimants to receive their full benefits, the assets of the terminated plans with losses should have been million greater. For the claimants with losses who were retired, eligible for retirement, or fully vested, the present value of benefits lost was about million.
