Furthermore, it is desirable in theological and religious discussion not only that the results of scholarship be published, but also that the historic method of scholar ship be explained, as it is important that the general reader, as well as the special student, should understand, in so far as possible, the movements which produced the results. It is hoped that the following pages will supply this need as well. I know of no great period of religious awakening or of moral-reform that has not owed its vitality to the faith of the people.
