Populists rise in times of crises through promises of economic prosperity. But do they keep their word? Existing data on populist leaders is expanded to cover a period of 120 years of global populism. The empirical analysis estimates significant negative performance gaps of populist rule with real GDP per capita growth being over 20 percentage points lower 15 years after populist takeover, compared to that of non-populist counterfactuals. There exists evidence that unsustainable macroeconomic policies like increased military expenditure, born out of a demand for security policies, act as a channel that damage the economy lastingly.
