Book excerpt: Abstract: The emergence of the library as a focal point for dissemination of health information is the basis of a manual for librarians and information providers. The changing social environment that supports medical consumerism and the need for health information are discussed. The role of the library in meeting this need and the legality of providing health information to the lay person are addressed. Seven library-based consumer health education programs operating in a variety of institutional settings in the U.S. and Canada are described. A number of program functions are analyzed in depth. An overview of health information networking activities, a list of services, and publications of major federal health information clearinghouses are given. A discussion of the application of mass media and modern technology to health promotion illustrates the considerable accomplishments in this emerging new area of library and community service. (emc).
