Book excerpt: The study has two major objectives: (1) to evaluate the significance of the cultural and natural values of the West Mesa according to National Park Service criteria and (2) to provide alternatives for the management of the area. The first of these objectives is covered in two sections of this document: "study area characteristics" and "analysis of significance." The second objective is met in the "alternatives for management" section. This document is in draft form. It is published as a draft so that local and state governments, other federal agencies, Indian groups, and members of the public can comment on it before it is sent to Congress. Once the final document has been prepared, Congress will decide if a national monument will be established on the Albuquerque West Mesa.
