Book excerpt: The state of corrections (CR) has come under attack during the past decade. Some argue that the public sector is incapable of handling the complex and changing dynamics assoc. with CR, and therefore more prisons need to be handed over to the private sector (PS); others argue that the PS should not be a part of the public matter of penalizing offenders of crime. Although the PS has had a long history of involvement in CR, private prisons make up less than 5% of the current market. This study offers a review of the history of privatization, presents a review of relevant res. on the issues, and compares major findings from studies on the benefits and costs assoc. with PS- and public-managed prisons.
