Book excerpt: As interest in enforcing humane treatment of animals increases in society, the necessity for well-trained investigators of mistreatment is evident. In the state of Wisconsin this responsibility is given to humane officers and law enforcement officers. These individuals have differing education levels in regard to investigating animal cases. The need for continuing education for these individuals in the animal cruelty investigations field has been shown in many studies. Some states, including Wisconsin, require humane officers to earn continuing education credits to maintain their certification. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a large animal/livestock investigations and handling program which focused on increasing the basic knowledge of participants as well as to determine if there were associations between demographics and survey responses. This research was conducted through the use of two surveys distributed at the beginning and end of the program. Survey responses were analyzed for any associations between demographics and responses. Results of this research indicated that overall the participants thought the program was beneficial and effective. The data showed that there are associations between participant's level of education, position, occupation length, if they are involved in veterinary assistance in investigations or just in humane investigations, and their survey responses. Recommendations from this study include implementing a pre-survey to generate input for more specific topics that these individuals are struggling with, enlarging the program to encourage more participation, and continuing to research program evaluation on continuing educational programs.
