Intellectual property (IP) created by NTBFs hold great value in market for knowledge and is known to create employment and wealth, fostering economic growth. Most of NZ's technology companies are smaller in size than the OECD average and lack specialised assets for commercialisation. The difficulty in commercialisation is compounded by their geographic isolation and distance from key international markets. Thus, NZ NTBFs often utilise technology out-licensing as their primary business model. Licensing allows these firms to access distant markets and leverage more developed firm's resources without the time and cost of developing their own capabilities. While there are many guidelines for technology licensing, most of the current literature on is from the perspective of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises. As a result NTBF technology licensing is an important topic for research. The lack of NZ specific studies emphasizes the importance of exploring licensing strategies used by NZ NTBFs. This research has aimed to understand the important factors that influence the licensing strategies of NZ NTBFs. By understanding how NZ NTBFs navigate the licensing process and observing their licensing strategies, this study aims to provide strategic implications of the important licensing factors for NTBFs as a whole. A qualitative case study approach using secondary data was employed to explore the licensing phenomenon on NZ NTBFs (industry cases) as a whole and in greater detail on Footfalls and Heartbeats Limited (FHL). The key findings from this research re-emphasized the importance of licensing for NZ NTBFs. Most NTBFs were financially or capability constrained. The constraining factors formed the firm's primary objective from out-licensing. Many firms focus their technology development on patents, considered the "crown jewels" of a firm; however, technology licensing encapsulates all forms of IP including know how and trade secrets. The success from licensing greatly depends on the licensee performance. Thus selecting the right licensee is essential. NTBFs choose reputable firms which are committed to developing and commercialising the technology. Many NTBFs often choose to have multiple revenue models including product sales. Licensing was found to increase competition by providing the competitor the same IP to exploit. Thus NTBFs employ geographical and field of use restrictions to limit the licensee while ensuring competition free operation in separate markets and fields.
