Book excerpt: This book examines the nature and the causes of migrant labour in South Africa. Oscillating migration occurs when men's homes are so far from their work that they cannot commute daily and can see their families only weekly, monthly, yearly or even less frequently. Migrant labourers thus include both seasonal farm workers and people in jobs for which there is little fluctuation in demand. Most countries employ some seasonal migrants, particularly in agriculture: South Africa is unusual in the number of migrant workers in other sectors of the economy.
