Book excerpt: The problem is that the Martinsville Fire & EMS Department (MF & EMS) does not have a risk-reduction program designed to reduce the number of residential cooking fires, which could lead to preventable property loss, injuries and deaths. The Administration of MF & EMS hypothesizes that such a program would reduce the total number of residential cooking related fires within the City of Martinsville. The purpose of this applied research project is to determine the known strategies for reducing residential cooking fires and determining which strategies the department should utilize to develop and implement a residential cooking fire risk-reduction program.
