Sample Book Insights: #1 I was hired by Brandon Tartikoff to work in the comedy department at NBC in December 1979. I was manager of comedy development, the junior member of the department. Brandon was a newly minted vice president of development. I was twenty-seven years old, and I knew next to nothing about network television. #2 The Charles brothers had worked on more than a few iconic programs: The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Phyllis, The Bob Newhart Show, and Taxi. They were hired to create a show for NBC, and they pitched a Miller Lite commercial. #3 The Cheers relationship with NBC was unique in the network world at that time. There was a pure partnership between Paramount TV and Charles/Burrows/Charles Productions. C/B/C didn’t need Paramount, but everyone wanted to be in business with them. #4 The casting process for Cheers was very inhumane, but it was a valuable lesson for me to listen to the network executives and the Charles brothers, who were convinced that Ted Danson was their guy.
