Book excerpt: The Housing Benefit (Amendment) Regulations 2011 were to give effect to the Government's plans to extend the Housing Benefit shared accommodation rate to people under the age of 35. The shared accommodation rate currently applies to people under the age of 25 living in the private rented sector. The Committee recommends that the proposals do not go ahead in their current form. They raise a number of concerns about the supply and availability of shared accommodation and comment on the impact of this change on a wide variety of individuals with very different needs and the level of financial loss they would experience. The Government does not accept the recommendation and plans to proceed apart from minor modifications
