Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Concept selection plays a very significant role in the conceptual design phase of a product. Many techniques exist today that facilitate evaluation and filtering of numerous concept variants generated by continuously expanded technologies. The principles of concept generation can be applied to predict part count and to rank concept on that basis. Part count thus becomes a useful tool to filter and select concepts. The techniques in Design for Assembly and Design for Manufacturing have not been exploited as a means to filter and select concepts. Since, both the techniques depend upon part count to evaluate manufacturing and assembly time part count estimation would inform this evaluation. These papers present a computer based part count tool as a means to generate a total number of product components by extracting the available data from the Missouri University of Science and Technology Design Repository. Furthermore, they discuss the application of part count tool to Design for Assembly"--Abstract, leaf iv.
