Book excerpt: Wind measurements taken during two storms in March 1967, using a dual-beam incoherent radar, are in good agreement with those obtained with a Doppler radar. During a third storm the dual-beam results fluctuated with apparent periods of the order of one to three minutes. A theory is developed to explain these fluctuations as the result of eddies of one third to one mile diameters and peripheral speeds of one quarter to one half. A limitation on range is derived for dual-beam wind measurement in cyclonic storms. Design criteria relating to PRF, wavelength, and antenna size for dual-beam wind-measuring radars are developed.
