Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisconsin Journal of Education, 1882, Vol. 12: Organ of the State Teachers' Association and of the Department of Public Instruction It was justly remarked at the summer meeting of the Associa tion, in a paper on a subject kindred to this, that this seems to be a question that will allow every man to ride his own hobby. The Writer omitted to state what is equally true of the subject: that a little practical knowledge of an ungraded department, founded on experience, will most likely unhorse the rider and demolish his hobby. A chief criticism on the graded system of schools is that it is in exible. Children are poured in at the hopper of the primary department, and the few who survive the grinding ordeal are turned out at the spout of the high school. The criticism is a just one. Every principal of a graded school knows that his school must be run to suit the wants of the average ability, and that the brightest pupils are held back and the backward ones prodded onward, until the interest of the one dies of inanition, while that of the other per ishes from chronic indigestion. To suggest a relief for the first class is not within the province of this paper. The ungraded de partment is the result of an attemm to do something for the back ward boys and girls of our graded schools. Pupils are backward, that is, behind their grade, from a variety of causes.
