Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Harmony The present work is the outcome of a request, addressed to me by the Council of the Royal College of Music some years ago (as the Professor responsible for the teaching of Harmony and Counterpoint in that Institution), that I should prepare a Manual of Harmony for use in the College. Began then, its completion was unfortunately delayed by my many and growing engagements, and I found it necessary to ask the aid of my pupil and former assistant, Dr. Sawyer, who has had much experience in teaching this subject, in order that the desired task should be completed. I have thought it right to couple Dr. Sawyer's name with my own on the title-page, as only fair to one who has devoted so much time and rendered so much valuable assistance in the preparation of this work.
