Book excerpt: This study is a continuation of an on-going project by the Computer Aided Structural Engineering (CASE) Committee on finite element analysis. This method of analysis, though in use for many years, is becoming more widely acclaimed as a viable method of solution available to engineers for structural analyses. Phase Ia of this study, discussed herein, seeks to inform the engineer of the necessary steps in performing a static finite element analysis of a Corps structure, a gravity dam. Following the preparatory information and the actual analysis, the results are interpreted and the accuracy of the solution is determined.
