This group petitioned the Canadian government for a reserve in 1878. The ancestors of this group were the Metis who fought in the Battle of Seven Oaks (1816) and in the Battle of the Grand Coteau (1851). The proposed reserve was to be 50 miles in width (north-south) and 120 miles in length running westward beginning where the Pembina River crosses the border from Canada into the USA."--
