Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the design and development of a novel microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based cantilever capacitive strain transducer used as the accompany telemetry systems for a proposed monitoring system for spinal fusion surgical procedures. The cantilever structure of the sensor is composed of two parallel plates with a narrow gap and a conjoint end. Nine permutations of the design with different metal coverage areas (14mm 2, 9.3mm 2 and 4.7mm 2) and gaps (3[micro]m, 6[micro]m and 7.4[micro]m) were examined. The nominal capacitance ranges from 7.6pF to 42pF. The capacitance varies from 31% to 65% for a strain range of 0 to 1000 bus depending on the design parameters. The working principle of the sensor on a cantilevered bar is presented analytically and compared with the measured results. Theoretical results were within 5% of the measured sensor response. One of the final sensor designs achieved a unprecedented gauge factor of 252 throughout the range of 0 to 1000 [micro]E.
