Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Composers and Their Works Perrin, and a composer, Robert Cambert, superin dent of music to Queen Anne of Austria, mother of Louis XIV., joined forces to write an attempt at French opera. This opera, which they called la Pastorale, was performed at the house of a rich citizen, and met with a prodigious success Ten years later Perrin received from the king let ters-patent authorizing him to establish at Paris an Aradémie d'opéra, in which works of this kind might be performed. It was a question of nothing less than a public theatre. Perrin organized his enterprise, had a theatre built, wrote the poem of a veritable opera entitled Pomona, to which Cam bert composed the music, and this work brought out in the month of March, 1671, for the inauguration of the new theatre, was received with such favor that it was kept on the boards for eight months. It may be said that French opera dates fron this event. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
