Book excerpt: A new technique for removing interstitial impurities from b.c.c. metals was devised in which a very high purity atmosphere of hydrogen was maintained over samples being heated at high temperature. For iron, this technique was shown to reduce the carbon to less than 0.005 ppm, nitrogen to less than 2 ppm, and oxygen as low as 3 ppm. The level of oxygen also depended upon the oxygen concentration in the starting material. The high-purity hydrogen purification technique was combined with other techniques such as zone melting, and high-purity arc melting to produce iron, molybdenum, and tungsten of high purity with respect to interstitial impurities. The effects of interstitial impurities on the mechanical properties of these metals were examined. (Author).
