UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. One of its most important programs is the World Heritage List, which recognizes cultural and natural sites of outstanding universal value. There are currently over 1,100 sites on the World Heritage List, located in 167 countries. In addition to the World Heritage List, UNESCO also designates biosphere reserves, geoparks and creative cities. Biosphere reserves are areas of land and sea that are dedicated to conservation and sustainable development. Geoparks are areas of geological significance that are managed for the benefit of both people and the environment. Creative cities are cities that have made significant contributions to one of seven creative fields: literature, music, performing arts, visual arts, film, folk art and gastronomy.
