Book excerpt: Being born falling from the sky was a rather odd experience. For Kira, it was no different. The air flowed over her limp body. Her appendages stretched to the heavens. Slowly, she opened her eyes. The glare from the sun pressed against her sight as if to keep a well-hidden secret. She could feel the frost on her lips as they separated slightly. She exhaled for the first time--the stillness of the moment dragged on for what felt like minutes. She drew her first breath. Her eyes flew open from the startling sharpness of the cold air. A myriad of senses called to her in that moment, her serenity abruptly interrupted. Scanning to her left, she gazed upon a star-laden backdrop. The universe pervaded her entire field of vision, canvasing all in view. The temperature was unforgiving, bringing intermittent twinges of pain, making its presence known. Her ears throbbed from the pressure differential between her inner ears and the surrounding, low-pressure atmosphere. Among these terrifying set of senses and circumstances, oddly enough, she felt no fear. Was she too disoriented to form cogent thoughts or was it something else entirely? Like any new born, she was working her way through the process, until she noticed, she wasn't alone.
