Book excerpt: Photostatic copy of a license from Domingo de Salazar, bishop of the Philippines, dated Aug. 21, 1587 in Manila, which grants the Dominicans permission to build a convent in that city. Father Juan de Castro, vicar-general of the Dominican Order in Manila, has petitioned Bishop Salazar for permission to build a church, houses, and a convent in Manila, in the street leading from the plaza to the Parián, the Chinese (Sangley) district of the city. Salazar approves the request and issues the license on Aug. 21, 1587, signed for him by notary public Antonio de Espomossa. This convent is most likely the same one documented in Ayer MS 1394, known as Santo Domingo de María and authorized by the governor on Aug. 17, 1587.
