Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 8: December, 1908 In May, 1905, children were first taken to the unimproved roof for systematic open-air treatment. The doors Of the sun room and elevator were too narrow for the passage of adult beds, SO it resulted that this treatment was limited to children. Cribs on wheels, rolling stretchers, wheel-chairs and carrying in arms, were the available means of transportation. The eastern Side of the sun-room, aided by a glass and wooden screen on the north Side, furnished such protection that even in snow-storms of the following early winter the children were taken for Six hours to the roof. This daily airing Of the patients was found to be rather more beneficial than the most sanguine had expected.
