Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediterranean, Malta or Undulant Fever Few but medical officers of the Army and Navy meet with this fever in its endemic area, and all our present knowledge about it has been drawn from the accounts of the experiences which they have been able to publish. Unfortunately their shifting and busy life affords but little opportunity for systematic research. One of the greatest advances towards gaining a knowledge of the fever, namely, its recognition as a distinct disease, by the Committee appointed by the Royal College of Physicians of London, by whom the last edition of the Nomenclature of Diseases has been drawn up, has been acknowledged by that august body, in their preface, as being in consequence, more especially, of representations made by officers of the Medical Department of the Army. This is not only a proof that such work has not been wasted, but is a matter for which those who have the honour of the Army Medical Staff at heart, may be pardoned for feeling some pride. The etiology and treatment of this fever are of considerable import ance to Great Britain, for the Mediterranean is not only a winter resort and important commercial centre, but is also a training-ground for a large fleet, and a half-way house in which regiments are acclimatised before proceeding to India. It contains a permanent force of over soldiers and sailors, and may at any time become the seat of warlike operations, when every available man may become of vital importance. All these troops are at present more or less exposed to the effects of this endemic fever, both in the garrison towns and in the various ports which our fleet visit. Its lengthened duration causes an enormous yearly financial loss, from non-effective pay and invaliding, while it may be said to be the most important, and next to venereal diseases, the most prevalent form of sickness affecting our Mediterranean forces.
