Book excerpt: Tony Winslow's never considered himself a huge Joe Cocker fan, but he does agree with the guy's most famous line: "I get by with a little help from my friends." It's how he escaped a life sentence in Mexico a few months back, when he took it upon himself-with a lot of help from his friends-to bring about some vigilante justice for some entitled punks from Orange County. But now Tony's friends are the ones who need help - like, a lot of it. They've somehow gotten themselves involved in a fledgling drug cartel made up of a bunch of meth-addled lunatics. They want out, but narcos generally aren't the kind of people who accept two-week notices. Once you're in, you're in for life. Only a crazy person would think otherwise, which is where Tony comes in. He owes his friends his freedom, so he'll do whatever it takes - trying his hand as a drug mule, undercover informant, and, eventually, cartel hit man - in order to bring things to a clean, merciful end. Here's a shocker: the ending isn't clean, nor is it merciful. And, along the way, Tony finds out that not everyone was ready to stop asking questions about that whole vigilante justice thing - and this might prove to be even more dangerous than any of his dealings with the cartel.
