Book excerpt: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is now becoming recognised as a serious issue for many people who find themselves in a relationship with someone who exhibits these tendencies. This is a memoir of love, childhood betrayal, mental health and spiritual awakenings that all grew from exactly that, an NPD mother. In the end though it is also a story of redemption and transformation. The author charts her own journey through this life adventure from the position of having now survived and even thrived from the whole story, but in the process highlight how grim it can be when a child in the midst of it, and how much of it is unseen from outside. The author finds her own way through and beyond, and is not prescriptive, though does ask some challenging questions for those who currently make provision for mental health issues, especially the more serious but more easily overlooked ones. NPD must be taken into account far more often, its potential power to destroy lives is too great to ignore any more.
