Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ole Rynning's True Account of America Materials of this kind have a many-sided interest. They contain contemporary descriptions of the various settlements established in the United States by Norwegian immigrants, and thus possess permanent value for the history of the Nor wegian element in America. Not a few of the books deal generally with the United States, presenting accounts Of American institutions and customs as viewed by Norwegians, and thus have a place in that large but relatively little ex ploited literature designated as general American travel and description. One of the most interesting aspects of the books is their influence in Norway. In their original form they played an important part in the dissemination throughout Norway of information about America; they were read by thousands upon thousands of prospective emigrants; and they must be studied by the modern reader who wishes to understand the back grounds Of the vast emigration from Norway in the nineteenth century. N'or must it be forgotten that what was happening in Norway had its counterpart in many other countries of Europe. In other words, these Norwegian books and pam phlets are in many respects typical of the travel accounts, emi grant guides, and similar works that went to almost every part Of Europe, contributing everywhere to the advertising of America among Europeans in the nineteenth century.
