Book excerpt: The problem of determining the size and shape of an earth orbiting radar target is not possible without prior solution of the problem of determining the motion of the target about its center of mass relative to some coordinate system. It is shown that given the time history of the short pulse returns from a surface of revolution, the times of occurrence of equal and unknown aspect angles (relative to the radar) can be determined by a suitable cross-correlation process. It is shown that given the above times of occurrence of equal and unknown aspect angles for a precessing surface of revolution, the parameters determining this precession can be determined. The case of tumbling motion is treated as a special case of precessional motion. A solution for the size and shape of a surface of revolution in terms of the short pulse aspect angle history is presented. (Author).
