Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 1: June, 1836 The College Library, to which we have constant access, will receive a regular supply of the most valuable medical books as W fast as they issue from the press, to reviews of which a portion of our Journal shall be devoted. Our sole object, as reviewers, will be to present to our readers a faithful and plain analysis of new books, whereby to attract attention to their merits, and assist in promulgating useful know ledge. We will only exercise the invidious office of exposing errors and defects, where they militate against sound doctrine and safe practice, and are thereby calculated to mislead the younger and less experienced members of the profession. Attached to no party in medicine, advocates of no particular doctrine, eclectics in science, zealous for improvement but oppo sed to useless innovation, we trust we shall be able, unbiassed by partiality or prejudice, to discern and commend what is excellent, and condemn what is erroneous, without reference to the source whence it comes. Besides the valuable Journals of our own country, the most approved periodicals of Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy, will furnish an inexhaustible fund of materials, that cannot fail to add utility as well as interest to our numbers.
