Book excerpt: English language teachers in Saudi universities find difficulties in teaching writing to their students. In order to teach writing skills effectively, English language lecturers need to improve their Instructional practices by using some innovative techniques. Among the modern techniques Of teaching English language in Saudi Arabia is collaborative writing. This study aimed to teachers' perspectives on using collaborative tasks in English writing instruction at the Saudi universities. Specifically, the study reported investigates the teachers' approaches to and reasons for integrating collaborative tasks in their English writing instruction, the difficulties they encounter in integrating the tasks, and perceived effects on their students' performance. The target participants for this study were English language lecturers in all the public and private universities in Saudi Arabia. The researcher used a mixed-method research design. The questionnaire was used as the quantitative data source, while semi-structured interview represents the qualitative one in the current research. The participants in the questionnaire were 276 teachers working in different universities in Saudi Arabia, while twelve English language lecturers participated in the interview. The gathered data were analysed by using two different software: SPSS and NVivo. The researcher used SPSS to analyse quantitative data and utilized NVivo software for analyzing qualitative materials. The results of both the quantitative and qualitative analyses showed a positive and effective impact for teaching writing skills collaboratively on the communication skills of the students in the Saudi universities.
