Book excerpt: Given changing demographics, all educators must face the reality of culturally and linguistically diverse, limited English Proficient (LEP) students in today's classrooms. Suburban schools are now finding they must meet this need. Usually, the number bilingually trained personnel in these areas is limited. We must better prepare the regular classroom teacher to teach LEP students both in teacher training programs and on the job. My inquiry project examined the perceptions of eight regular classroom teachers from suburban schools. Teachers were interviewed about how the increase in LEP students affected their teaching and classroom. Furthermore, I asked them if the increase had changed their teaching of multiculturalism. The results of my research were clear. Teachers found the demands of LEP students challenging with more individual time needed to help these students as well as more time needed to plan, find, and modify curriculum. They often felt overwhelmed and frustrated with some LEP students who needed more help than they could give and were not progressing appropriately. However, the interviewees overwhelmingly found the increase in diversity to be beneficial to the classroom. My research found the participants grew as multicultural people and now taught more multiculturalism. All of the teachers found the increase in LEP students to be a positive change but clearly wanted and deserve more training and support.
