Book excerpt: Texas Hill Country HaikusAs a youngster, I was fortunate to grow up on the eastern edge of Texas' Hill Country, surrounded by nature's bounty and simple, funny people, who loved life and one another. Now, decades older, I live along the balmy coast of south China. Even though I am as far from Texas as one can get, I often think about those picturesque hills-teaming with armadillos, roadrunners, and the like-splendidly rolling toward a setting sun on the western horizon. The Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poem going back hundreds of years. Haikus often remind us of the earth's simple beauty and suggest poignant, fleeting flashes of time. They celebrate nature in a simple form (five syllables, followed by seven syllables, followed by five syllables). The haiku seemed like a suitable way to express my love for the Texas Hill County, and the people and animals who make it home.J. W. Ellis
