The Guinea Voyage: A Poem in Three Books is his poetic account of the slave trade he witnessed as a Catholic priest on the Atlantic ship. The ship crashed during the sea storm, and James Stanfield was one of the three surviving people. Upon returning home, he got acquainted with a prominent abolitionist, Thomas Clarkson. They exchanged a series of letters about the slave trade, which was later published. Later, Stanfield transformed the letters into a poem.
