Book excerpt: Abstract: The relationship between stress and athletic injury was examined among male and female college level gymnastic competitors. The investigator attempted to see if positive and negative life stresses were predictive of athletic injury. Subjects consisted of 16 male and 29 female gymnasts from the men's and women's varsity gymnastic teams at Springfield College and the women's gymnastic team at Southern Connecticut State University. Data from the Athletic Life Experiences Survey (Passer & Seese, 1983) along with injury data, the number of days of practice, and meets missed due to an injury, recorded by the athletic training personnel at each institution were collected and used to test the hypothesis. Negative, but not positive, life stress was found to be a significant predictor of athletic injury among college level gymnasts. Twenty-six percent of the variance in injury days was explained by negative life event scores (B = .2655). These results suggest that a high level of negative life stress can predispose a gymnast to injury.
