Book excerpt: It is 1808 and Britain is at war with Napoleon Bonaparte's France. Joshua Firth is a young British officer in the 29th Regiment of foot eager for adventures in the early stages of the Peninsular War in Portugal and Spain. Firth is thrown into the cauldron of war at Rolica and then soon after at Vimeiro. His actions bring him to the notice of the British Commander Sir Arthur Wellesley who dispatches him on a seemingly easy task to deliver a message to a Spanish ally. What begins simply enough quickly turns into a fight for not only Firth's life - and that of a mysterious, beautiful prisoner - but also a battle to foil a treacherous plot that could destroy Britain's ability to defeat France.
