They escape by accidentally breaking into ZOAR II, a secret biosphere constructed to house the president of the United States and staff if a nuclear war were to occur, then in the 1960s. Unable to find an exit, they are trapped there for ten years, thus subject to the indictment of being absent without cause during the Vietnam War, an act punishable by death. How they survive this isolation from society, their fundamental differences on issues, and bearing a child they name Hope is the essence of this adventure. Finally, Beth and Jeff miraculously find the way out of ZOAR II. To avoid prosecution for the AWOL not of their making, they assume new identities. Seeking a second refuge, they settle in Seaside, California.
