Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Book of the Art Societies of New York, 1898-1899 This volume presents a review of the work of the most important art societies of New York for the year ending June, 1899. It is designed to preserve, in permanent form, a record of their proceedings and a summary of their chief undertakings. It has been prepared with special reference to the outside public, from which, more and more, these societies are drawing their support, and whose interest is constantly being heightened by the work they are pursuing. The delay that has attended the publication of the volume has been due to the introduction of this wholly new work by a number of separated societies, and the labor involved in preparing a perma nent record of work which it was not proposed to retain in this form at the time the work was done. Each Society is directly responsible for the matter that relates to it, which in each case was prepared by its Secretary or a Committee appointed for this purpose.
