Book excerpt: Abstract: This field-based environmental science curriculum project was developed to be integrated into a traditional general science program at the middle school level. The curriculum was developed in response to two primary concerns. The first concern was the lack of community involvement within the existing science curriculum. The second concern was the need to promote environmental stewardship because of the region's unique geological features. Within the new curriculum, students will work with their teachers and local experts to gather water quality data using both chemical tests and electronic test probes. Data will be gathered from several points in the Sturgeon Bay shipping canal and at several points along Big Creek, which runs through the school district nature preserve. The data will then be analyzed and disseminated for public use and scrutiny at the district environmental center.
